Rollers

Also called: garage door rollers, wheels, track rollers

Rollers are the small wheels mounted along each side of the garage door that ride inside the vertical and horizontal tracks. Common roller types are nylon (quiet, longer-lasting) and steel (cheaper, louder). Residential rollers typically last 5–10 years depending on use and lubrication.

Definition

Each garage door panel has rollers, typically two per panel, one on each side, that ride inside C-shaped tracks. As the door opens and closes, the rollers translate the door's vertical motion into the horizontal track at the top of the garage.

Two main types:

  • Steel rollers, cheaper, last 4–7 years, noticeably louder, and develop wobble as the bearings wear.
  • Nylon rollers with sealed bearings, quieter, last 10–15 years, and don't require lubrication beyond the spring annual tune-up.

Worn rollers are a primary cause of garage door noise and the leading cause of off-track events (when a roller breaks or pops out of the track, the door's geometry collapses).

Why it matters to Nashville-area homeowners

Upgrading from steel to nylon rollers during a routine maintenance visit is one of the cheapest noise-reduction upgrades available, typically $80–$150 in parts and 30 minutes of labor. For any home with the garage attached to bedrooms, the nylon upgrade pays off the first morning the door doesn't wake the house.
