How a torsion spring actually works
A torsion spring is a tightly wound steel coil mounted on a shaft above the door. When the door closes, the spring winds tighter and stores energy. When the door opens, that stored energy lifts the door's weight, the opener motor is just guiding, not lifting. That's why a properly balanced door can be lifted by hand with about 8–10 pounds of force.
"Cycle life" means one full close + open. A 10,000-cycle spring is rated to do that 10,000 times before metal fatigue catches up to it. At 4 cycles per day (typical busy household), that's about 7 years.
The five real causes of spring failure
In order of how often we see them in Middle Tennessee:
- Cycle fatigue (most common) , , springs are a wear item. They will break eventually, period. A 10,000-cycle spring at 4 cycles/day fails around year 7. Heavier daily use (kids, work-from-home, multiple cars) pulls that in.
- Rust from humidity , , a corroded spring fails far below its rated cycle count. Tennessee's humidity makes this worse. Lubricating springs annually with white lithium grease dramatically extends life.
- Cold weather , , steel becomes more brittle as it cools. Most spring failures we get called for happen between November and February, on the first hard cold morning of the year.
- Undersized springs for the door weight , , a heavy carriage-house door installed with light residential springs will eat springs every 18–24 months. Often a leftover from a low-bid installation.
- Loss of factory lubrication , , springs ship pre-lubricated. Once that wears off (3–5 years), bare metal-on-metal coil friction accelerates fatigue.
Warning signs before a spring snaps
Springs don't always go without warning. Watch for:
- Visible gaps between coils (springs unwind as they fatigue).
- Surface rust streaking down from the spring shaft.
- The opener straining or sounding overloaded on opening.
- The door feeling unusually heavy when you lift it by hand with the opener disengaged.
- A noticeable bang from the garage when the door is closed, sometimes the first sound of a partial coil failure.
How to make springs last longer in Tennessee
Three habits dramatically extend spring life in our humidity:
- Lubricate the springs once a year with white lithium grease (not WD-40, it's a solvent, not a lubricant). Wipe down, then re-apply.
- Get a yearly tune-up that includes a balance check. An unbalanced door makes springs work harder than they're rated for.
- Upgrade to high-cycle springs (20,000 or 30,000 cycles) when it's time to replace. They cost roughly 30–50% more upfront and last roughly twice as long. The math works in your favor for any high-use door.

What to do next
If your springs are showing visible gaps, surface rust, or the door is suddenly heavy to lift, schedule an inspection before they snap. A planned replacement is cheaper, safer, and lets you choose the upgrade tier instead of taking what's on the truck for an emergency call.
