Garage Doors · When should

When is a garage door problem an actual emergency?

Treat it as an emergency when the door is stuck open and your home is unsecured, a car is trapped inside, a broken spring has left the door off balance, or the door is off track and could fall. Most other repairs can wait for next-business-day service.

What "emergency" means in garage door service

A garage door emergency is any situation where the door creates an immediate safety, security, or accessibility problem you can't reasonably wait through. It's not about inconvenience, it's about risk.

Most "won't open" or "won't close" calls aren't emergencies, they're frustrating but they're scheduling problems. Real emergencies are a much shorter list.

The four situations that really are emergencies

Call for emergency dispatch when any of these are true:

  1. Door stuck open, home unsecured , , anyone walking past can see into your garage and reach interior doors. This is a security emergency.
  2. Vehicle trapped inside , , and you need to leave for work, a flight, or a medical appointment. Worth the after-hours fee.
  3. Broken spring with the door off balance , , the door is too heavy to safely operate manually and could fall. Do not try to force it.
  4. Door off track or one cable snapped , , the door is unstable and a second component failure could drop it. Stay clear and call.

Three situations that feel urgent but aren't

These are real problems but usually fine to schedule next-business-day:

  • Door closes but won't open (and you can park in the driveway) , , inconvenient, not unsafe. Save the after-hours fee.
  • Opener stopped responding to remotes (door manually operable) , , diagnostic call, not emergency dispatch.
  • Noisy operation that just started , , worth fixing soon (it'll get worse) but it's not an emergency.

How we handle emergency calls

When you call Dad & Daughter for an emergency, you speak with our Brentwood team, not an offshore call center. We confirm the situation (stuck open, trapped vehicle, off-track door, broken spring), give you an honest ETA based on current call volume, and disclose any after-hours fee before we dispatch. No surprises on the invoice.

Our trucks carry springs, cables, rollers, and opener parts for the most common after-hours failures so most emergencies are resolved in a single visit. If the right part isn't on the truck, we'll secure the opening (so your home isn't exposed) and complete the work next business day.

What to do next

If you're facing one of the four real-emergency situations, call 615-422-5800 now. Tell us exactly what's happening (stuck open, trapped car, broken spring, off-track) so we can dispatch the right truck.

For non-emergency repair scheduling, see garage door repair. For full emergency service details, see our emergency service page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does emergency service cost extra? +
An after-hours dispatch fee may apply depending on time of day and day of week. We always disclose the fee before dispatching a tech, never as a surprise on the invoice.
Can I close my garage door manually if the opener won't? +
Sometimes. If the springs are intact (door isn't unusually heavy) you can pull the red emergency release cord and lower the door by hand. If the springs are broken, do not attempt this, the door is too heavy and could fall.
What if the door is stuck closed and my car is inside? +
Pull the red emergency release cord to disconnect the opener trolley, then lift the door by hand. If it's too heavy to lift, the springs are likely broken and you'll need emergency dispatch.
