What's actually inside an opener
A residential garage door opener is a small motor (¼ to 1¼ horsepower), a drive system (chain, belt, screw, or wall-mounted direct-drive), a logic board, safety sensors, and a remote receiver. When the opener "fails," it's almost always one of those, and you can often tell which one from the symptoms.
The motor and gears are the slowest-wearing parts. The remote receiver, capacitor, and logic board are the fastest. Knowing the difference saves you from replacing the wrong thing.
Six warning signs that come before a full failure
These are the patterns we see in the 4–8 weeks before a Middle Tennessee homeowner ends up with a dead opener:
- Grinding or popping from the motor housing , , usually stripped plastic drive gears (a common, fixable failure on older chain-drive units) or a worn capacitor.
- Door hesitates, slows, or stops partway , while opening, the motor is struggling, the springs may be losing tension, or the rollers are dragging. Both should be inspected.
- Opener runs but the door doesn't move , , the trolley has disconnected, the belt or chain has slipped, or the drive coupler is broken.

What's worth repairing vs. replacing the whole opener
A good rule: if your opener is under 10 years old and the failure is mechanical (gears, belt, trolley, capacitor, sensors), repair is usually the right call. If it's 12+ years old, has had multiple repairs, or the failure is in the logic board, replacement is the better long-term value.
