Definition
A garage door opener (sometimes called an "operator") is the powered unit, typically ceiling-mounted, that drives the door open and closed through a trolley running along a rail. Common residential drive types are belt, chain, screw, and direct-drive (jackshaft).
A key misconception: the opener does not lift the door's weight, that's the springs' job. The opener provides only the modest force needed to overcome friction and start the door moving. When an opener struggles or fails, the springs are almost always the actual root cause.
Modern openers ship with safety photo-eye sensors, manual disconnect release cords, and adjustable force-limit settings as federally mandated safety features.
