Definition
A belt drive garage door opener uses a fiber- or steel-reinforced rubber belt, visually similar to a serpentine belt in a car, to pull the trolley up and down the opener rail. The belt is tensioned over a sprocket at each end of the rail.
Belt drives are favored for two reasons: noise (a belt drive is typically 8–10 dB quieter than a chain drive, the difference between "garbage disposal" and "refrigerator") and vibration (rubber dampens the impact-and-restart pulses that chains transmit through the ceiling structure).
Modern premium belt drives ship with DC motors and soft-start/soft-stop ramping that further reduces both noise and mechanical wear.

Most Brentwood and Franklin homes have a bedroom directly above or next to the garage, and that's exactly where chain-drive noise carries. We default to belt drive on every attached-garage install where someone sleeps within earshot.
