Definition
Safety reverse is the automatic mechanism that prevents a closing garage door from injuring people, pets, or property in its path. It triggers in two ways:
- Photo-eye triggered: the beam between the two sensors is broken while the door is closing, opener reverses immediately.
- Resistance triggered: the door contacts an object (a paint can, a vehicle bumper, a person) and the opener detects the resistance through current draw or contact pressure, opener reverses immediately.
UL 325 requires both behaviors and specifies a maximum force threshold (typically tested with a 1.5-inch object placed on the floor under the closing door, the door must reverse on contact).
A safety-reverse test is part of every routine maintenance visit and should be tested by the homeowner monthly using a 2x4 block laid flat under the closing door.
